TOUR KA05S - SHARON Vermont to PALMYRA New York to KIRTLAND Ohio
| Dates/Days |
Departs Saturday, September 5, scheduled to return to Salt Lake City
Saturday, September 12, 2009. 8
great days,
7 restful nights. Expected to be very pleasant and mild late-summer temperatures with low crowds at the sites. |
| Summary |
Tour begins by exploring
inspiring some of the most important spiritual sites in the history of this
world. We'll experience sites in and around
Sharon Vermont, the birthplace of the prophet Joseph Smith.
Marvel at the stunning 38-1/2 foot obelisk monument dedicated to Joseph's
memory. Attend a memorable sacrament meeting with the Sharon Ward.
See sites in Tunbridge where Joseph Sr and Lucy Mack spent their early
years. Then on to beautiful upstate New York visiting South Bainbridge
& Colesville, Harmony & the Susquehanna River then on to
Palmyra and the
Sacred Grove and Smith log home where the Moroni visits took place and Smith
frame home, and Hill Cumorah. Also, Fayette where the Church was organized and the Three
Witnesses of the Book of Mormon saw the plates from which it was translated, saw the Angel Moroni,
heard the voice of God witness the translation was true. As we drive toward Kirtland, spend an enjoyable
afternoon visiting awesome Niagara Falls USA
with a thrilling boat ride right up to the base of the falls. In the
Kirtland area, spend nearly three
unforgettable, incredible days in and around the area.
More revelations and visions took place there than all other church history
sites combined! The Kirtland Temple alone is worth the whole
trip. But there is also the Newell K. Whitney Store &
School of the Prophets, restored Whitney home,
Pioneer water-driven saw mill,
Fairport Harbor on Lake Erie, the home of siblings Eliza R. and Lorenzo Snow, and the John Johnson farm
where D&C 76 was given in the presence of a room full of people! You
will never forget it! |
| Motels |
Quite nice!
Good places to sleep, just right for our short-time needs at the motels. Always clean and
comfortable. Indoor swimming pool
most nights.
|
| Food |
Deluxe continental
breakfasts at all motels, tasty sack lunches on the bus as we travel in
comfort from site to site (saves over an hour each day allowing time to see
more in fewer days!), and wonderful buffets for dinners. Enjoy a
delicious dinner with a delightful Amish family in Ohio.
Great food is plentiful and so have been the compliments on past tours! |
| Palmyra Temple |
The Lord's purposes cannot
be frustrated for long. The beautiful Palmyra Temple is built on the
Smith farm property and overlooks the Sacred Grove! How wonderful that
without any violence or bloodshed, 168 years from the time the Smiths had
to flee Palmyra, this wonderful temple could be built and welcomed on the
same property the Smith family loved and lost. Optional temple session
for those who wish (you'll need to take your temple clothes & current
recommend). |
| Special features |
Eight inspiring days with Karl R. Anderson (Institute
instructor/director, author, patriarch,
wonderful person!) as he shares uplifting insights and information about
these incredible sites, the prophet Joseph Smith, and the faithful Saints
who joined with the Church. Hear accounts and information about
crucial events such as the building of the Kirtland Temple and the
glorious events that took place therein. Understand like never before
about events that took place at these crucial historic sites throughout this
area. You'll be able to put a place to inspiring stories you've heard
and feel of the spirit of the sites as you learn of important events that
took place.
Of Karl Anderson, it has been authoritatively said: "Kirtland is not the same place when you're there without him. With him, you see the vision of that marvelous community and the Pentecostal outpouring of the power of the Spirit of God." Each day starts with a hymn and a prayer and ends the same way. Presentations on the bus while traveling between the sites are inspiring and informative. As much as practical, sites are visited in historical order to make this complex history easier to understand and remember. |
At the sites listed below, carefully-prepared vignettes and historical accounts are given of the faith promoting events that took place. Tour members are invited to read accounts of important events and, where possible, these are given in words of those who were there at the time.
| Sharon VT | Birthplace of the prophet Joseph Smith. Magnificent obelisk monument erected at the family cabin site. The story of the building and placing of this monument is, in itself, a remarkable story! Beautiful, peaceful grounds and visitors' center. |
| West Lebanon NH | Site of young Joseph's terrifying and unusual leg operation due to a bone infection as a result of the Typhus epidemic. Hear their accounts of this unusual situation and young Joseph's consummate bravery. |
| Tunbridge VT | See the town hall, village store (Joseph Sr's store for a time), and the Mack sawmill. Lucy Mack's and Joseph Sr's marriage documents. |
| South Bainbridge & Colesville NY | Joseph and Emma were married here by Squire Tarbell as they eloped from Harmony. These towns were home of some of the most faithful early Saints of the church. Important historic figures Josiah Stowell, Joseph Knight, and Newell Knight came from this area and we'll discuss their importance to the restoration. |
| Harmony PA | Home of Emma’s family where Joseph met and fell in love with and eventually eloped from with Emma. Most of the Book of Mormon was translated here except for a few pages--hear Emma's description. Temple-like atmosphere at the Susquehanna River where John the Baptist restored the Aaronic priesthood and near where Peter, James, and John appeared and restored the higher Priesthood! Very moving visit! |
| Palmyra NY | Smith family farm and log home where Moroni's visits took place. Sacred Grove (including private meditation time), Hill Cumorah, Grandin Press, Martin Harris Farm, Palmyra Cemetery, very special session at the Palmyra Temple. This is an absolutely unforgettable opportunity! Two nights in this wonderful area. |
| Fayette NY | Peter Whitmer Farm where the Church was organized. Site of the visions to the three witnesses. Many D&C sections received here. Learn about this incredibly faithful family and the great blessings they received through their great faith. |
| Mendon NY | Brigham Young, his father, and all ten living brothers and sisters joined the Church here in 1833. So did their spouses. All went through immense hardships as a result. None ever apostatized. Heber C. Kimball joined, too. Heber’s father is buried here, as is Brigham Young's first wife, Miriam Works Young. This is a wonderful, wonderful stop. |
| Niagara Falls USA | Take a thrilling Maid of the Mist boat ride right up to the falls--your shoes might get wet, but a raincoat is provided. We'll take a few hours to relax and enjoy the magnificent scenery of this amazing waterfall on the way to Ohio from New York. |
| Fairport Harbor OH |
On Lake Erie, just 12 miles from Kirtland. Here saints arrived and departed from points east, including nearly all missionaries going to and from Europe. |
| Kirtland OH | Newell K. Whitney Store (School of the Prophets; Word of Wisdom received here with several other D&C sections). Also new spectacular Kirtland Visitors Center, the newly-restored John Johnson Inn, sawmill, schoolhouse, and ashery. Also a visit to the Isaac Morley Farm (United Order revealed and practiced here). Private tour of the Kirtland Temple. Visit nearby historic sites such as Painesville, Orange, Shaker Heights, South Amherst--and more. Learn more about the D&C revelations received here and important early Church history events and conferences that took place at these sites. |
| Hiram OH | John Johnson Farm. Joseph Smith lived here for a year while producing the “Inspired Translation” of the Bible. He was also tarred and feathered here. Many sections of the D&C received including the great 76th three degrees of glory. |
We hope you can join us for this extraordinary tour and experience, in a most memorable way, where the Book of Mormon came forth, where many of our early prophets began their ministry, and where the Church, itself, began. This is truly a Holy Land of North America.
