Phillips Brooks, rector of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, wrote the lyrics. Brooks gained the inspiration for this composition by visiting the Holy Land in 1865. He wrote the song as a Christmas gift for the children of his church in 1868. The organist, Lewes Redner, composed the melody on Christmas day.
