|DAYS 1 & 2
Fly to Rome, Italy
|The pilgrimage begins with a flight to Rome, arriving mid-morning of day 2. First stop is at the intriguing underground Catacombs. We’ll then drive just outside the city to take a peek at the beautiful Rome LDS Temple under construction. Back to Rome to check-in at the hotel for dinner and overnight. A great way to start a delightful tour!
Christian Rome, Ancient Rome
Enjoy fascinating insights from MHA guide & art/history expert Judith McConkie at Borghese Gallery (Bernini’s works), Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo (Caravaggio’s works), and San Pietro in Vincoli (home of Michelangelo’s Moses).
Visit the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls. The present structure stands over the place where Constantine built the first church over Paul’s grave. Enjoy the Vatican, home to one of the greatest museums in the world. Enter the immense St Peter’s Basilica and Sistine Chapel to view Michelangelo’s frescoes which have been restored to their full, colorful glory. Finish the day at the Pantheon, built by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus (27BC to 14AD). Emperor Hadrian rebuilt it around 126AD.
Explore the history that winds through the streets and neighborhoods of Rome as in no other city. Visit ancient Rome at the magnificent Colosseum and Mamertine Prison–where Paul was held prisoner. From the most sacred hill of ancient Rome, Campidoglio, view the Forum. See the Circus Maximus, Arch of Titus, famous Baths of Caracalla and Arch of Constantine, the Victor Emanuel Monument. Climb the graceful Spanish Steps and stop at the famous Trevi Fountain, follow the tradition of tossing a coin over your shoulder to “guarantee” your return visit to this amazing city!
|Say arrivederci Roma (‘til we meet again, Rome!) and transfer to Civitavecchia to board Celebrity’s luxurious Reflection for 5pm sailing.
Messina & Taormina
|Arrive in Messina, Sicily- a city rich in history and the connecting point of the “Italian Boot.” In neighboring Taormina, climb to the mountaintop Greek Theater with its spectacular views of the Mediterranean and Mt Etna. Enjoy a gelato and shopping or simply wander the streets to absorb the delightful culture and catch breathtaking views over the cliffs to the seaside below. Six-hour guided tour.
|Visit Valletta to see the wonderful Barrakka Gardens, a beautifully landscaped public park. Savour breathtaking views of the Grand Harbour, after which you will head for St Paul’s Bay to see the possible site of Paul’s shipwreck. Journey to the medieval walled city of Mdina, called The Silent City due to restrictions imposed on motorized traffic. Enjoy a visit to the Baroque-style St Paul’s Cathedral which presides impressively over the town. Enjoy a walk through the narrow streets and lanes of this piece of living history. Guided tour.
|Enjoy the day at your leisure. Join in relevant MHA guide presentations between swims, meals, and naps.
|Morning arrival in Greece. Have an enchanting day exploring the exceptional beauty and culture of the Greek island of Mykonos with its lovely bays and beaches, its distinctive whitewashed structures, and cobblestone streets.
Shore excursions booked on your own through the cruise line.
Rhodes & Lindos, Greece
|Explore the island of Rhodes–Paul briefly visited this island on his way to Jerusalem. Over 1,200 years later, the Knights of St John fled here after Jerusalem fell to Suleiman the Magnificent. Walk among the castle and old town. Visit the acropolis of Lindos to admire the stunning views of the surrounding harbors and coastline–a magnificent hike through a quaint shopping village. Full-day guided tour.
Santorini, Greece (on own)
|Dock at Santorini, one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands. Its picturesque, whitewashed villages with brilliant blue domes dot the cliffs high above the sparkling Aegean Sea. The island perches on the edges of a volcano whose eruption 3,500 years ago is thought to have led to the collapse of the Minoan civilization. The day is yours to enjoy tours, shopping, restaurants, culture, and views galore!
Shore excursions booked on your own through the cruise line.
Athens & Corinth, Greece
|The architectural splendors of the ancient city of Athens are as magical as ever. View the world-renowned Acropolis, the Propylaea, and the Parthenon. Climb Mars Hill where Paul debated with the intellectual community of his day. Walk among the ruins of the agora and center of Athenian public life. View the Olympic Stadium before traveling to Corinth, the city that inspired Paul’s most familiar letter. Archaeological museum, market place, temples. Walk among the ruins and stand on the Bema where Paul stood to defend the gospel. Full-day guided tour (lunch included).
|Another day on the sea, at your leisure, to do as you wish, and to enjoy MHA guide presentations.
Naples & Pompeii, Italy
|Arrive in Naples, a dazzling city perched on a beautiful rock coast. Paul landed in the Bay of Naples on his way to Rome. Journey inland and explore ancient Pompeii, dating almost to the time of Paul. See the spectacular ruins that were buried 7 meters deep by ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (yes, you’ll see that, too!) in 79AD. Full-day guided tour (lunch on your own–you’ll want to try Margherita pizza since it was invented here!).
