Days 2,3,4

Sept 20, 21, 22

Arrive in Munich.  We spend the first few days in Bavaria, enjoying the excitement of Munich: Glockenspiel, Rezidenz (Royal Palace), the castles of crazy King Ludwig (including Neuschwanstein, from which Walt Disney patterned Sleeping Beauty’s castle).  Perhaps take in a delightful evening concert or opera.  Travel to Regensburg – discuss Apostle Orson Hyde’s travels here during his mission to the Holy Land (incredible details!), visit the Old Town, Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady.  Continue to Wurzburg.  Overnights in Munich and Wurzburg.

Day 5

Sept 23

Visit the stunning 18th-century Wurzburg Palace with its formal gardens and magnificent halls.  Continue to Darmstadt the town where the first LDS branch in Germany was established in 1843.  Travel to Mainz to the Gutenberg Museum to see an original Gutenberg Bible and a replica of the original printing press – easily come to understand the significance this great invention had in bringing about the restoration.  Overnight in Mainz.

Day 6

Sept 24

Spend a leisurely day on a beautiful, winding Rhine River cruise with a stop in the village of St. Goar where you will have opportunities to see the world’s largest cuckoo clock, perhaps buy a Stein, or visit the well-preserved Rheinfels Castle.  End the day at Cologne cathedral, home of one of the best examples of a baroque cathedral in the world.  Overnight in Cologne.

Day 7

Sept 25

Start the day off right with a fun-filled visit to the famous Lindt Chocolate Museum (& gift shop, of course!).  Then “back to the business at-hand” while we learn of Martin Luther, and other vital reformers, who paved the way for the restoration – visit Wartburg Castle where Luther translated the Bible into German, which translation Joseph Smith said was the best one up to that time.  Overnight in Schweinsburg (2 nights).

Day 8

Sept 26

Onward to the Saxony region which was behind the Iron Curtain, specifically to the city of Zwickau, the boyhood home of Elder Dieter Uchtdorf.  Attend Sacrament Meeting with the Zwickau Ward.  Enjoy the evening with local members as they share their experiences of having lived in East Germany.

Day 9

Sept 27

Begin the day at the historic Wittenberg Cathedral where Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door in 1517 challenging & protesting the teachings of the Catholic Church.  Continue to St Thomas Cathedral in Leipzig to visit Bach’s burial site and Goethe House (amazing Wilford Woodruff connection).   Overnight in Berlin (3 nights).

Days 10 & 11

Participate in an inspiring Freiberg Temple session, the only temple to be built in a Soviet-run country.  We end our tour with 1 ½ days in Berlin – see important Berlin Wall sites, perhaps visit the Holocaust Memorial, and stand at the Brandenburg Gate (which became the symbol of German reunification).  Enjoy some free time in Berlin.  Visit Sanssouci, considered the Versailles of Germany, home of the benevolent Friedrich the Great.
